"Should we work with one big name or lots of smaller creators?" is one of the first questions in any influencer plan. There's no universal answer, but there is a clear way to decide.

The tiers

Follower counts are a rough guide, and thresholds vary, but these are the most commonly used bands:

TierFollowersTypical strengths
NanoUnder 10,000Close community, low cost, authentic feel
Micro10,000 to 100,000Niche authority, strong engagement, good value
Macro100,000 to 1 millionBroad reach, polished content
MegaOver 1 millionMass awareness, cultural moments

What micro (and nano) influencers are good at

  • Niche trust. A fitness coach with 30,000 local followers can be more persuasive to gym-goers than a celebrity.
  • Engagement. Smaller audiences often comment and reply more, though this varies by creator.
  • Volume and testing. For the same budget you can work with many creators, test different messages and find what works.
  • Content to reuse. More creators means more content for your own channels and ads (see UGC vs influencer marketing).

The trade-off is management time. Ten creators means ten briefs, ten approvals and ten payments.

What macro and mega influencers are good at

  • Reach in one go. Useful for launches, openings and announcements.
  • Production quality. Larger creators often have teams, equipment and experience with brand work.
  • Credibility by association. Being featured by a well-known name can be news in itself.

The trade-offs are cost, less precise targeting (a large audience is usually more spread across countries and interests), and more concentrated risk if one post underperforms.

How to choose

Start from the objective, not the follower count:

  1. Awareness for a launch? One or two larger creators for the headline moment, supported by smaller creators for depth.
  2. Sales in a specific city or niche? Several micro creators whose audience is in that city and niche.
  3. Ad creative? Prioritise content quality over audience size; follower count matters little.
  4. Small budget? Nano and micro creators let you test before committing.

Check the audience, not just the size

Whatever the tier, three checks matter most:

  • Location. For a UAE campaign, what share of the audience is in the UAE?
  • Engagement. Are recent posts getting genuine comments, or generic emoji replies?
  • Fit. Does the creator already talk about things your customers care about?

Our guide to spotting fake followers shows how to run these checks in a few minutes.

What each tier costs

Prices vary with deliverables and usage rights more than with tier alone. For live figures from creators' listed packages, see the UAE Creator Rates Report and influencer rates in the UAE. To compare creators across tiers, browse influencers on AFFWORLD and filter by platform and price.
